Luz Garcia Abcede was born on June 4, 1932, one of 12 children in a blended marriage, in Manila, Philippines. She was a practical girl, musical too, but always focused on using her intellect to build herself a career path. She had seen her older sister thrive as a nurse as World War II began, so it was a natural choice for Luz to follow in her sister’s footsteps. That path would lead her to a small territory of the United States, a little island called Guam.
There, working as a nurse at Guam Memorial Hospital, she met her husband, Angel Abcede, Sr. Five years later, she would have a son, George. The next year, a second son, Timothy. Then finally, in 1963, she had Angel Jr., the author of the book, House of Nurses: An American Journey.
